CELEBRATE HERITAGE DAY WITH USSeptember 23, 2020
Heritage Day is celebrated on the 24th September every year through dance, music, braai’s, dress-up and a lesson on all the histories of each culture in South Africa.
The significance behind Heritage Day is that South Africans celebrate and learn the history of their cultures, and the cultures of others as South Africa is a diverse nation. It is also important to note that Heritage Day came about in 1966 in commemoration of King Shaka’s important role in uniting the Zulu tribes in KZN, hence it was called Shaka day. As there are a variety of cultures in South Africa, there are different ways of celebrating them.
One of the famous ways to celebrate Heritage Day is hosting a braai. South Africans are known for their love of braaied meat, so this is top of the list. Schools in the country dress up in their cultural outfits on one of the days leading up to Heritage Day. Some workplaces also celebrate by dressing up and sometimes a lunch planned in celebration of the holiday.
Heritage Day is an important day in South Africa because it gives people a chance to understand and perhaps adapt to a different culture/ tradition. Over the years, South Africa has proven that diversity is beautiful and enrichens the cultural wealth of the country. Therefore, the importance of celebrating Heritage Day remains significant because it educates and a reminder that diversity makes us united.
In his words, Nelson Mandela said, “When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.”
