Head Lice
Head lice are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood. They’re only found as
parasites on humans.
Female head lice lay small oval-shaped eggs (nits) on hair. The eggs measure 0.3 to 0.8
millimetres. The eggs hatch in about 7 to 10 days and must have human blood within 24
hours to survive. Head lice become sexually mature in about 8 to 10 days. They live for about
30 to 40 days. The only way to prevent them from hatching would be to remove them with a
good metal nit comb, or your fingernails.
Head lice will not go away on their own. If you think your child has an infestation, there are
several steps you should take right away before they get back to school
Notify your childs day care or school so other students can be checked.
Follow strict personal hygiene.
– Wash hair daily
– Check other members in the household.
– Wash all bedding and clothes after treatment to prevent re-infestation.
