In preventing the spread of HIV and assisting young South Africans t self-screen, Sparkport Group of Pharmacies has joined 4eachother to dispatch, educate and treat those who may be unaware of their HIV status.

4eachother is an organisation that envisions to bring information, services, prevention and treatment options into pharmacies that will assists their customers to stay HIV free.

4eachothr has introduced a PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis), which is HIV medication that keeps HIV -negative people from contracting HIV. Pre, means to take before. Exposure, means to have intercourse with a person that has HIV but you are unaware or sharing needles with a person whose status you don’t know. Prophylaxis, is a medicine to prevent infection.

PrEP is for anyone who is HIV negative and feels that they have a chance of contracting HIV. PrEP is recommended for couples that are looking to have children but the one partner has HIV. PrEP is an option for anyone who

  • Does not know the status of their partner.
  • Has had unprotected sex
  • People who have had sex under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

PrEP is taken 7 days daily dose for men before unsafe sex, and 20 days for women.

Risky sexual encounter/possible + taking the pill for 28 days after possible exposure = effective protection against exposure (Sourced from 4eachother booklet)

Side effects from PrEP that can be expected include nausea, headache, diarrhea and tiredness.  But these are said to go away after a few weeks, should these continue, a consult from your Pharmacist or doctor would be advisable.

Before starting this PrEP journey, it is encouraged that a doctor or pharmacist clears usage before using the mediation.

It is also important to note that PrEP does not

  • Prevent other STI’s
  • Prevent pregnancy
  • Protect you from HIV exposure

HIV prevention is a huge topic and a problem and needs constant attention. Therefore, Sparkport Group of Pharmacies is working with 4eachother to dispatch FREE HIV self-screening kits.

“HIV Self-Screening kits offer you an accurate and private way to screen for HIV in the comfort of your own home.

Rapid HIV tests provide quick results and offer benefits such as convenience and privacy.

The OraQuick® HIV self-screening kits use an oral swab for testing and requires no blood.
