INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS

October 1, 2020 By sparkportadmin 0

The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated on the 1st October as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December, 1990.

This day was designated to allow and remind citizens that older people have Constitutional rights that they should be able to enjoy. Since the start of the South African democracy, the government has looked at taking care of the older persons through pensions, old age homes, and safety security where it is has been necessary.

The older generation is of great importance to a country. Old people are known to be wise because of the experience they have. In business or life in general, they are the gold of a country because if the knowledge and skills they possess. Therefore, this international day for older persons was made to appreciate them and remind those that abuse them, to stop.

South Africa is a spiritual country that follows tradition and also religious beliefs. Across all religions and traditions in country have laws on respecting elders are emphasized, as respecting elders is considered a blessing. Respecting and acknowledging an adult could include:

  • Spend time with them (and listen intently). …
  • Be polite. …
  • Ask for advice. …
  • Eat together. …
  • Discuss family heritage, history and traditions. …
  • Call them. …
  • Tell them how much you appreciate and respect
  • Visit senior living communities.

This day is usually celebrated by visiting old age homes, baking for the elderly etc. however, because of COVID-19, some stores run promotions, for some, special isles are created just for pensioners, and this is also to honour them. The sad reality is that after this day, many neglect the elderly people in their families. Stories of grandkids abusing their grandmothers by rape, taking their pension money and not looking after them have been heard.

It is essential that the elderly is looked after, appreciated and well nurtured all the time and not just on certain days. Raising awareness on appreciation and respect of the elderly ca improve how the elderly are treated, and influence a better treatment for them worldwide, and most importantly those around us.
