Celebrating National Down Syndrome Day: Understanding, Acceptance, and Support
Every year on 20 October, South Africa observes National Down Syndrome Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about Down syndrome and communicating important facts about the condition. At Sparkport Pharmacy, we believe in supporting every member of our community, and today we want to share important information about Down syndrome and how we can all contribute to a more inclusive society.
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that occurs at conception when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21, known as Trisomy 21. This additional genetic material affects development and causes characteristic physical and intellectual features associated with Down syndrome.
People with Down syndrome may share certain physical traits, such as a flattened facial profile, almond-shaped eyes, and lower muscle tone. However, it’s crucial to remember that each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual with their own personality, talents, interests, and abilities.
Important Facts About Down Syndrome in South Africa
- Down syndrome affects approximately 1 in 650 babies born in South Africa
- The condition is not related to age, race, religion, or socio-economic status
- Although women over 35 are at higher risk, 80% of children with Down syndrome are born to mothers under the age of 35
- While Down syndrome cannot be cured, there is a variety of medical care available to treat associated health challenges
- People with Down syndrome can and do attend mainstream schools with appropriate support
- With proper healthcare and support, many people with Down syndrome live fulfilling lives well into their 50s and beyond

Down Syndrome South Africa: Local Support and Resources
South Africa has a strong community of support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA), established in 1986, serves as the national umbrella body and parent advocacy organisation. With 12 regional associations and support groups throughout the country, DSSA provides valuable services, information, advocacy, and support networks.
How You Can Make a Difference
Creating a more inclusive community starts with each of us. Here are some simple ways to show support:
- Wear your jeans on 20 October: Join the campaign to show solidarity
- Learn and educate: Understanding Down syndrome helps break down misconceptions and stereotypes
- Use person-first language: Say “person with Down syndrome” rather than “Down syndrome person”
- Challenge discrimination: Speak up when you witness stigma or unfair treatment
- Celebrate abilities: Focus on what people can do, not what they can’t
- Support inclusion: Advocate for inclusive education and employment opportunities
- Support local organisations: Consider supporting Down Syndrome South Africa and regional associations
