International Epilepsy Day
International Epilepsy Day
At Sparkport Pharmacy, we stand in support of individuals living with epilepsy and their families. Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide, making it one of the most common neurological conditions.
What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes recurring seizures. These seizures occur due to sudden, brief disruptions in brain cell electrical activity. Every person’s experience with epilepsy is unique, and seizures can vary in form and severity.
How to Help Someone Having a Seizure:
- Stay calm and time the seizure
- Clear the area of any dangerous objects
- Place something soft under their head
- Turn them onto their side if possible
- NEVER put anything in their mouth
- Stay with them until they are fully conscious
- Call emergency services if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes
When to Seek Emergency Help:
- If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
- If another seizure begins before full recovery
- If breathing difficulties occur
- If the person is injured during the seizure
- If it is their first seizure
