Are Your Kidneys Getting the Care They Deserve?

Every year on the second Thursday of March, the world observes World Kidney Day — a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health. At Sparkport Pharmacy, we believe prevention and early detection are your most powerful tools.

Why Your Kidneys Matter

Your kidneys filter around 200 litres of blood daily, regulate blood pressure, activate Vitamin D, and keep your electrolytes balanced. When they’re not working properly, toxins build up — and the consequences can be life-threatening.

The Silent Threat

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is called the “silent disease” because it rarely shows symptoms until it’s already advanced. In South Africa, it’s a growing concern — driven largely by high rates of diabetes and hypertension, both leading causes of CKD.

Key risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, a family history of kidney disease, and frequent use of painkillers.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Swelling in your legs or feet, persistent fatigue, changes in urination, foamy or dark urine, and puffiness around the eyes can all be early signs something is wrong. If any of this sound familiar — especially if you have risk factors — speak to a healthcare provider.

Lifestyle Changes to Protect Your Kidneys

  • Drink 6–8 glasses of water daily to help flush out toxins
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes, 5 days a week
  • Quit smoking — it reduces blood flow to the kidneys
  • Keep blood pressure and blood sugar levels under control
  • Avoid overusing painkillers like ibuprofen and diclofenac, which can damage kidneys over time
  • Cut back on alcohol
  • Get regular kidney screenings, especially if you have risk factors
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed and don’t skip doses

Foods That Support Kidney Health

  • Cabbage — low in potassium and rich in vitamins, great for kidney function
  • Garlic — a natural anti-inflammatory that also helps reduce sodium intake
  • Cauliflower — high in fibre and a good low-potassium vegetable choice
  • Berries (blueberries, strawberries, cranberries) — packed with antioxidants that protect kidney tissue
  • Egg whites — a high-quality protein that’s easier on the kidneys than red meat
  • Olive oil — a healthy fat that’s phosphorus-free and anti-inflammatory
  • Fish (especially salmon and tuna) — rich in omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation
  • Onions — low in potassium and a great flavour substitute for salt
  • Apples — high in fibre and anti-inflammatory, a kidney-friendly snack
  • Water — the single most important thing you can drink for kidney health

Foods to limit include processed and salty foods, red meat, dark colas, bananas, potatoes, and dairy in large amounts — especially if you already have reduced kidney function.
